Today, we walked in a group of 15 to Cold Harbour Mill to plant some trees! It was a mixed group from year 5 and 6 and we were all from the Green Team which is to help the environment and make the planet a better place . At first, we were early so we had a play in the park. We were all playing pirates on the pirate boat...it was actually good fun! Altogether, there were 450 trees to plant and to be grown. Our group planted about 50 odd trees overall and considering we only had 45 minutes to plant them in, we did pretty good! For the planting we were in a group of 2. We had 1 shovel, the plant, a bamboo stick and a plastic protector! We all had great fun and we would definitely go again. That was a little bit about our day out !
Today, we had an Eco meeting. The first thing we did was introduce the School Council representatives from year 1,2,3,4,5 and year 6! Also, we have now got our Eco Team badges which is great! We had our picture, which included all of the Eco Warriors! We have made an action plan for what we want the teachers and green team to work on - community work and lessons with more Eco-topics!
Hello I was wondering if you knew about the Uffculme Green day in the village on the 22nd of September 2018! There were many amazing refreshments including sweet treats. The stalls around us were amazing, but did you know what we had on our stalls? We had grass heads, guess how many crisps were in the jar and finally the junk modelling competion.
On the 22nd September our Green Team will have a stall at the Uffculme Green day (at Magelake) from 10 untill 4pm. We will be doing a junk modelling competition so please come and enter!
Welcome to all of the new members of the Green Team including Mrs Cole who has joined us this year!
The Green Team has finished Re-bot the recycling robot! We have learnt to ‘RE – create’ from our old rubbish. You will see him in the foyer outside the office. You can put your letters in its belly but no confidential or money please. You can put milk bottle lids in the other slot for Mr Everson’s friend who can use them to make wheelchair tyres! Please be careful with Re-bot! Thankyou.
Today, we did a waste audit. We sorted out the bins into recycling categories. We really found a nappy that Sally had to take away. Recycling became better. We increased our recycling by 73%. Last year we were recycling 11% but this year we recycled or composted 84%. We also found a bannana which was yucky! And we also found apple cores. Unfortunately some people don't put rubbish in the right place which was very upsetting but we fixed it. We came up with some ideas about how to teach all the children which bins are which. By Joe and Sam. We have some winners! Well done to Emily and May who won the competition to design posters for the side of the new recycling lorries! They went to a fantastic presentation event and are going to be in the Tiverton Gazette. Watch this blog for more info as it unfolds. Emily wrote a wonderful article for the Sampford Peverell local magazine. Here it is with some of the photos...
My school sent out letters about a competition. You had to design a poster to encourage people to recycle. If your poster was engaging enough, you would get picked to have your design on one of the Mid Devon recycling lorries. Not only would you get your picture on the side, you would also get the lorry named after you. Designing the poster was fun and there were lots of amazing entries. I was one of those lucky six to win. I found out when I got a letter at my door; I was so excited I couldn’t stop smiling - I was surprised people didn’t think something was wrong with me! Me, along with the five others, were invited to a small presentation. We got given a certificate along with a copy of our winning design while a bunch of people took our photos - it felt like I had my own paparazzi but it was only a couple of photographers and my mum. Each of us got given a recycling goodie bag filled with some fun things: a pencil made from recycled CD cases, fascinating; two boxes of raisins, healthy but yummy; gummy worms, absolutely delicious and a cook book with recipes made out of left overs - I’m pretty sure that was my mum’s favourite as the first thing she said when she saw it was “that’ll be handy!” So look out for a lorry named Emily. I can’t wait to see it on the roads! If you see it I really hope you like my design. Emily Packham Age 10. ...and photos... The Green Team have been creating a post box robot. The robot is called REBOT; recycle and robot put together.
Rebot is made of recyclable materials - cardboard boxes as the body, tinfoil unicorn horn, cardboard tube and plastic tube arms , yoghurt pot ears, blown up rubber glove hands and a lead antennae. The Green Team have worked extremely hard to finish it and we hope you'll be seeing Rebot very soon by the main entrance!!!! I know its been a while since we have writen a post but we have a new thing to share! Us, as the Green Team, have brought in some new bins: compost and recycling. We have been working hard to make catchy signs to go on the new bins. We are hoping that these signs will help the other children to put their rubbish in the correct places.
To keep this system working, we have created multiple rotas for the school council and green team to follow at lunch times and break. We have many rotas for different things: sorting through the bins, standing by food waste bins, litter picking and more! |
